Lincoln City Ladies recorded a fine 4-0 win over Aston Villa this afternoon, a result which sees them top their division with just one game to go.
The Lady Imps are now on equal points, with a marginally better goal difference than the league leaders Notts Forest. A better win than Forest next weekend in the rearranged game against Sunderland will see them promoted to the top flight for the first time in their history. Both teams currently have 55 points, but the Imps have a plus 51 goal difference, as opposed to Forests plus 50. It couldn't be closer!
Forest have so far gone through the whole season unbeaten, but the Imps have lost twice. However City have won one more game giving them the edge.
Forest entertain Sheffield Wednesday at the same time as the Imps travel to Sunderland. However Sunderland currently sit third in the league, with Wednesday languishing down in seventh, so the Imps will have their work cut out.
City did complete 45 minutes against Sunderland last weekend, going in 1-0 up at the break. However snow halted play and the game will be replayed fully with that goal meaning nothing. However frustrating that might be the Lady Imps will know that 1-0 next weekend may not be enough.
