Ok the crooked Church beat us but there was that spirit in the face of inevitability that filled me full of pride, as I walked the bank back to the Station on Saturday. Another side with a bigger budget had come and conquered – that’s an undeniable fact - but the team, very much a work in progress, had hung on in there. Those in the Stacey West saw Davies actions that finally put paid to a late rally that threatened a point, albeit at the gloves of Carson, a hero and villain.
The feeling was mixed, as you would expect from a second home reverse, but many fans could see that we were up for giving most teams a game, that perhaps could be enough for us to be there or thereabouts this season. Lets look upwards for once shall we, go with the flow and see where Steve Tilson and Paul Brush – the Sincil Saviours can take us.
It is likely that we will come up short, but football is surely and rightly detached just enough from reality, that we can dream. If we can’t the game is up and they might just as well put the padlocks on at least two thirds of the football league now. A good run in for the Imps is essential if the crowds are to return and new CEO Mr Prescott is to have sufficient cloth to work with. If the board back Steve Tilson you feel a few pleasant dreams will come our way for a while.
Indeed many of the not so inspired in the congregation of the church derby, walking those well trodden streets, were hoping that the muted investment does come off. Not the millions any Lottery winning Imp would put in, but just enough for perhaps a 20 goal man like Grimes, a keeper like Carson and a central defender like Hunt. Oh and perhaps that midfield colossus we have been missing for some time now. Strange how things seem to be panning out this week with Carson and Hunt making positive noises about next year. But we grey heads know and hope for just enough cash to fill our city full of enough hope and pride to bring back the 4-5,000 we need to survive and prosper.
That can be achieved at a side that wins more than it loses, with two directors at the helm that at least appear ambitious. For in Football, an entertainment business in a competitive 21st century market remember; the fans will only come through the turnstiles if they believe what they see is good value for money and that the custodians of the club have the desire to allow us to compete.
No one expects the Championship even though he has done it before but perhaps occasionally punching above our weight, is just the thing you would like and expect to see when you hear the phrase The Mighty Imps.
