Saturday’s match against Wycombe was only the third game Gavin McCallum has started for the Imps since signing from Hereford United - no Bulls. His goal touched the Stacey West's soul, and after the jubilation his determination also caused much elation after a season of small beer and fear.
So what is the secret problem with the Canadian? Is he as alcohol addled Vic suspects - Mad dog McCallum who eats or dates Moose? One or the other (hic). Oh no no he is the show stopper, a superhero who fires cannon balls at all who would attempt to relegate the Imps.
Mmm thanks Vic but the lad certainly deserves another outing, after all he was one of Chris Sutton's headline summer signings? Yes, staggering isn’t it, this was his first start since we lost 2-0 at Torquay on 14th August 2010. His 10 substitute appearances have seen him get the last 15 minutes if he is lucky adding up to 358 minutes in an Imps shirt (296 League and 62 cup). Even Kevin Gall got more airtime than that
No wonder the striker and wide man was a whirling dervish on Saturday. It was like the freeing of a caged Lion as he paraded up and down the left and let rip a howitzer of a twenty five yard volley that made statues of a static Wycombe defence. As Victor Meldrew would say ‘Would you believe it?’
Hat’s off Gavin – Oh that you will be given another chance to perform like that next week. But wait what do we see in our Shiny Sincil crystal balls? Why its 3 up – ‘tis criss cross Carayol or by Jove Jarrett and Mad Dog McCallum either side of Grimes. Mmmm that’s the dream spark at Edgely Park . We will need it with them offering deals to get everyone roaring the team on from their famous 'Pop Side'. Oh for the days of 2-3-5.
