REMEMBER REMEMBER THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER

Last updated : 22 July 2002 By Jonathan Hall

Lincoln City Football Club today announced that Manchester City FC will be visiting Sincil Bank Stadium on the evening of Tuesday 3rd September 2002 for a friendly encounter. A bumper crowd is expected for the lucrative tie against the Premiership newcomers which will undoubtedly provide the Imps’ coffers with an initial boost.

The same week, another “big game” is set to benefit the Imps financially, as Scunthorpe United are the visitors to Sincil Bank on Saturday 7th for what promises to be a fierce local derby. As the old football adage goes, local derbies bring in much welcomed revenue and the battle against rivals Scunthorpe somewhat guarantees this.

The mouth-watering friendly with Kevin Keegan’s cosmopolitan stars has been carefully arranged so not to clash with the first round of this year’s Worthington Cup competition, which commences the week of 9th September.

The prospect of the Blues’ record signing Nicholas Anelka and former Imps favourite Darren Huckerby gracing the Sincil Bank turf is very appetising, and very much a possibility, when viewing Man City’s fixture list. Keegan’s men entertain Everton on 31st September and meet Arsenal ten days later on Tuesday 10th. The friendly at Lincoln will therefore act as an extended warm-up prior to the massive game at Highbury.

One can expect Kevin Keegan to field a relatively strong side when his team come down to take on the Imps, as his personal relationship with the club goes back to the days he was at the helm of Newcastle United. Keegan was so kind enough to bring his Toon Army to Sincil Bank several years ago to play a friendly game (in which a certain Alan Shearer debuted for the Magpies), and ever since, that little connection has been maintained.

September could provide the Imps with a real-lift as their season begins to get going….

The kick-off time and admission prices, for the friendly versus Manchester City, will be announced nearer the date.
