City winger Paul Smith (28) has been forced to retire through injury. The right sided player made his final appearance for City in Cardiff at the Millenium Stadium in May. A recurrence of a previous back injury ruled him out for this season, and he has been forced to retire on doctotors advice.
Smith signed for the Imps from Nottingham Forest in 1997 after a spell with non league Hastings. He was originally loaned in October 1997, then moved permanently for £30,000. Struggled throught the 1998 seasonwith injurys, but soon regained some of the form that convinced John Beck to make him an Imp. Scored 6 goals in 33 matches in the 1999/2000 season which probably represnts his most sucesful season in an Imps shirt.
Speaking at Sincil Bank today Smith spoke of his pleasure at having played for the Imps:
"I've had six and a half excellent years at Lincoln, and they are like a family here. You can rest assured I'll keep in touch with all the lads and the staff".
Smith added he felt the rapport he had built up with the fans was something that would stay with him. "The fans have been great to me over the years and I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone".
With both himself and Chris Cornelly injured long term City have lacked the options out wide that propelled them to their Cardiff appearance last season. The loss of 'Smudger' at the peak of his career is a big blow for the Imps. He will be sorely missed at The Bank.
