Futcher requests move

Ben 'freak' Futcher - Premiership bound?
Imps defensive stalwart Ben Futcher has handed in a shock written transfer request in light of the Imps failure to reach division two this season.

Futcher has been one of many bright lights for the Imps over the past two years following his transfer from Doncaster on the eve of the 2002-2003 season. At 6 foot 6 inches Futcher hardly looks like a strong centre half, a view echoed by many who witnessed his first collection of appearances in a City shirt. However as the season progressed ‘Big Ben’s aerial prowess began to reap its rewards with the defender netting 10 goals to become City’s leading scorer.

This season Futcher has been in terrific form alongside Paul Morgan despite leaking more goals. The arrival of 6 foot 5 inch Jamie McCombe signalled the start of what could have been a powerful defensive pairing. It looks increasingly like McCombe will perhaps be replacing Futcher rather than working in tandem with him.

Futcher has been the subject of speculation in the last few weeks with Bolton Wanderers and Aston Villa both showing interest. It is more likely however that Ben will move into the second or first division with Hull City amongst his admirers. Another keen admirer of his talents is Peterborough boss Barry Fry who made attempts to sign Futcher when Francis Green moved to Lincoln earlier this season.

Futchers request hasn’t yet been accepted or declined with chairman Rob Bradley indicating that there would be no decision until the end of the week. Futchers existing deal runs until summer 2005. If it comes down to a choice between a fee now or a free transfer at the end of next season then it may be that City will have to do without last seasons Young Player of the Year.
