Burton 3 Imps 1 A View From The Stacey West

Last updated : 08 March 2011 By Neil Hobbs

Another night of dross at Burton Albion with the Imps comprehensively beaten by the Brewers.  The fans did get one moment of magic from Ashley Grimes, but judging by the texts people those that went are not overly enamoured by another poor performance. At least we have now scored against the Brewers and what a goal it was.

But To The Game Footy Fans To The Game...................

A lethargic start by the Imps saw Burton take the initiative and make the early running.  Webster’s header was cleared off the line by Kelly in the third minute before the Brewers took a deserved tenth minute lead.  A long ball from Webster caused a calamitous mix up between Carson and Hone and lone front man Winnall nipped in to round the keeper and shoot home from inside the box.

Penn then fired inches past the post before Watt headed against his own bar as the Imps struggled to stay in the game. We would happily take just a one nil deficit although Carayol produced a couple of crosses at the end of the first half to at least give the 200 that travelled a smile.

Then straight after half time a killer blow as the Imps once again succumbed to a set piece on 48 minutes. Paul Boertien swung in a corner and left winger Webster turned in from close range.   Burton continued to dominate with the woeful Imps offering little before Burton added a third. Carayol fouled Jacques Maghoma at a corner giving ref Haywood no option but to award a penalty. Sam Winnall made no mistake from the spot giving Carson no chance.

Tilson tried a double substitution in the 62nd minute to little effect with Clapham on for McCallum and Hutchinson on for Fuseini.  On 75 Scott Spencer came on for Facey and looked lively in the last fifteen minutes linking up well with Grimes and Hutchinson.  Grimes made the journey almost worthwhile when he curled a 25 yard wonder goal from the left hand side of the area into the far corner for a superb consolation in the 82nd minute.

A shot count of 20 from Burton to the Imps 3 showed just how comprehensively we were beaten tonight. They passed better got into us early and never let us settle with 4-2-3-1 strangling our conventional 4-4-2.  With Southend coming up on Saturday you have to fear the worst. Let us hope none of those at this one comeback and tell their friends as there will be few enough pay on the gate Imps as it is.
