A crowd of 452 sat in the Echo Stand only to watch a competitive cup tie between the Imps second string and Scunthorpes third string. Both sides had first team players on show, notably for Lincoln Danny Hone and Stefan Oakes while Scunthorpe had Garry Thompson, Josh Wright and Matt Sparrow on the bench.
It was Scunthorpe who started brightly exchanging some lovely passing but not really threatening City's goal. However in the 16th minute a trademark pinpoint pass from Stefan Oakes was nodded home by Andy Hutchinson.
The game tended to be fought in the middle of the park with Josh Wright pulling the strings for a lively Scunthorpe side. Trialist Sam Clucas was putting himself about for the Imps, but fellow trialist Sam Jerome barely showed the crowd he was a footballer.
Nathan Adams saw a cracking drive just over, but generally looked uncomfortable stuck out on the wing. However both him and Andy Hutchinson were giving really good accounts of themselves.
In the last minute Scunthorpe scored after a scramble in the penalty area. The otherwise solid pairing of Kern Miller and Danny Hone were caught napping and May stabbed past Paul Musselwhite from eight yards.
The game went straight to penalties and with typical malaise Stefan Oakes missed his effort with a Gareth Southgate-esque strike at Josh Lillis. By the time Kern Miller missed his City were on the way to losing the county cup, the competition the were formed to win 125 years ago.
