Battling Lincoln City earned a place in the League Two play-off final with a smash-and-grab act at Macclesfield Town.

Just as in the first leg, they stole an early lead when wing-back Gareth McAuley latched onto a Gary Taylor-Fletcher corner to head in off the far post in the 15th minute.

It was a similar goal to his first leg header as the impressive defender burst through the Town defence unmarked.

Macclesfield had started nervously, and in the second minute Paul Harsley had to clear a Kevin Sandwith corner off his own line. Their first chance came when the ball broke to Mark Bailey in the box, but the defender was only able to hoof the chance over the crossbar.

The Silkmen began to step up the pace before the break with Kevin Townson producing a sharp turn only to warm the fingers of Alan Marriott from 15 yards.

After the break their man mountain striker Jonathan Parkin lashed a volley across the six-yard box before Matthew Tipton hammered a drive into the side-netting.

Lincoln should have sealed the game in the 69th minute when Simon Yeo seized on a Tony Barras back-pass only to slice wide with an open goal at his mercy.

Macclesfield were given a lifeline in the 76th minute when Harsley turned neatly on the penalty spot before chipping the ball into the top corner of the net.

The home side then threw everything forward with Kevin McIntyre volleying straight at Marriott in the 83rd minute before Parkin curled a 22-yard shot wide two minutes later.

Their last chance came when Danny Whitaker fired in a stunning 25-yard shot which Marriott miraculously tipped over the bar.
