Sincil Bank rang with the singing of the gathered host. 2-0 to the Mighty Imps was the call, and by gum, it was. On a night when expectation for the Imps amounted to perhaps stifling Rochdale and gaining a handy point, Keith Alexanders men took the match by the scruff of the neck and brought the game to Dale. Simon Yeo was first to strike with a beautiful left foot shot that cannoned off Edwards' left hand post and into the net. To make the occasion more sweet it happened in front of the Stacey-West stand, where an assembled throng sang and chanted for the majority of the match. Yeo, already a hit with the Imps faithful because of his never-say-die attitude and hard work, found himself with two defenders to beat. A deft inside move took him past before he unleashed what can only be described as "pearler", that left Edwards in the Dale goal clutching at thin air. The scene of jubilation at scoring his first ever league goal was marred however, by the ridiculous decision Referee Mr Ross who saw fit to book Yeo for his celebration. Yeo could be forgiven at least given the fact that it was his first ever nationwide football league goal
Largely the game had taken on the quality of a fencing competition, with both teams parrying and thrusting, but neither seemingly able to get that vital point. In the second half however, The Imps, evidently strengthened by Keith Alexanders' half-time team talk, took advantage of good play. The second goal was a well executed move, which involved Mayo floating a cross over from the left wing, where Paul "Smudge" Smith was waiting. His header bounced downwards and bounced over the helpless Edwards, and seemed destined to be travelling into the far corner of the net. Dene Cropper was on hand to make sure that it was nudged into the net, making it 2-0 to The Imps
A fantastic night for Imps, and the fans.
